So here begins the lyric-a-day project, where the challenge is to er… write a lyric-a-day. Basically I’m over in Australia for a month so thought I’d do something useful! A few people have told me recently that lyrics don’t matter, which is a filthy thing to say! If theres no lyric (or a bad one) then then song lacks meaning (unless its a great instrumental!)
Anyway follow the blog on
http://davegerardspeaks.tumblr.com/
or on the Lyrics section of the website!
Hey guys, me and my old friend Matt Carter from new formed band ‘Maps’ wrote this track in a couple of hours. It’s rough and needs work but I think it has some potential? x
Recording Day 2
So we had magic bass man Dan Rogers recording some more bass for us in the studio, playing both his giant heap of beautiful wood upright bass and his electric. When we were done we had a spare five minutes and did a quick stripped down acoustic stables.
Recording Diary 1
Just for anyone who’s stupid enough to be interested we’re going to be keeping a diary of recording the new E.P.
Today we worked on ‘Never Understood’ one which we’ve previously played a fair bit live but never recorded. Live takes was the order of the day with me and James on acoustic guitars and Dan on the upright who’s a pretty amazing player!
We also started on Let it be real, but after the weekly Dave spilling tea session and being knackered gave up!
x
So Folk Giants Ben Walker and Stephen Thomas have put together a compilation album of up and coming folk artists and have asked us to headline the launch! Some really amazing artists are also playing
Last time we played it looked like this

Just to post about how awesome the Manuden Music Festival was. Really loved all the great acts such as Aliceband, Jack in Water, Dan Wilde and more! Big thanks to Dan Rogers and Joe Chipperfield who both played bass for us on a track for us. The sun, crepes, music and beer made it a great day and the event raised £8,400 for ADAS Alcohol & Drugs Advisory Service, if you’d like to donate to this awesome charity visit http://www.adasuk.org/donations.html

There’s a girl across the sky,
And she likes to get high,
As she’s arranging all the flowers for her art.
And the rose is a staple,
For a girl who’s unstable,
She’ll just pick off all the petals in the dark.
Either way leave them at my door,
You know I’ll only ask for more.
She sent them one by one,
And by the time she was done,
I had a room full of roses and ideas.
And rose was pretty,
Though I never felt worthy,
So I gave her something to fear.
Either way leave them at my door,
You know I’ll only ask for more.
Next we danced in the orchard,
Until things got awkward,
And she picked me a orchid for the road.
It’s ok I suppose,
I’ve a room full of Rose,
She’s arranging all the flowers for her art.
It’s cold in the open,
But I never could care,
I’ll make my home here,
For another year.
A million Different colours
Sleep with me tonight,
I’m alone with you,
And a canvas of lights
A thousand different Islands,
Scattered from their ragged shore,
There’s a brand new mist,
At the ending of a civil war.
The last ship is sinking,
The captain’s escaping with his whore,
He is a coward of a man,
Just watching blankly his crew struggle aboard.
It’s a new day, it’s a new day,
I just can’t think of this no more.
Down among the wastelands,
The canons wont fire anymore,
They’re sick of all the drama,
at the end of the civil war.
The fighters look so graceful,
They’re our hero’s in uniform,
But why did no-one tell them,
Theres no hero’s in a civil war
It’s a new day, it’s a new day,
I just can’t think of this no more.
Nobody knew how to get to her truth,
Was a long line, that led to her door.
When it came to my turn we crashed and I burned,
in the evening, was a battle till dawn.
But its oh so quiet in the morning, When there’s nothing,
But its oh so quiet in the morning, When there’s nothing,
But its oh so quiet in the morning, When there’s nothing left to say.
In morning we’d dance, map travels to France,
And stay here, lost in bed all day.
But as the hours grew old, and the day took its toll,
We ‘re ready, for battle once more.
But its oh so quiet in the morning, When there’s nothing,
But its oh so quiet in the morning, When there’s nothing,
But its oh so quiet in the morning, When there’s nothing left to say.
Nobody knows, it the end where she goes,
Is a long time, waiting on her call.
Now love I’m low, I have nowhere to go,
And I’m longing, to do battle again.
I take the back streets for you,
Starring at the holes in my shoes,
There’s Dirty rain and smoke in the air,
But I’m just too close to care.
And it won’t be long, Till you’re wondering with me.
And it won’t be long, Will we’re wondering at sea.
And I’ve got lost in the woods,
Right where the night creatures stood,
They’re staring at me in the dark,
But I know I’m close to where you are.
And it won’t be long, Till you’re wondering with me.
And it won’t be long, Will we’re wondering at sea.
I take the river down to yours,
Just an old wooden boat with an oar,
Rowing just the wind against the tide,
And you’re lying, basking on the side.
And it won’t be long, Till you’re wondering with me.
And it won’t be long, Will we’re wondering at sea.
Well I stole your picture,
Hibernated in your bed,
Took some souvenirs from your draw,
So I try to work out why,
This fascination grew,
Why I’m rolling in your clothes down on the floor.
I’ll give them to your brother,
To give back to you,
Goes to show my conscience always cares,
Now I’ve left you a note,
And pinned to to your ghost,
I hope you’re home the next time that I stay.
Now you’re in my Garden?
Sprawled out on the grass,
A drunk maid borrowing my stuff,
Well I didn’t see this coming,
When I was sleeping in your room,
Truth is that I’ll never get enough.
Let us pause for a minute in the road,
Drag our children out into the unknown,
For they know not what to believe,
For they know not what to speak.
My youngest they say is like me,
He’s still waiting on his world yet to see,
And he needs not a drop of my wealth,
For he’s rather be anywhere else.
Oh son, can’t you see,
Your time is short it’s time to leave.
But my daughter has her mothers eyes,
Once lit up like an arctic sky,
But her husband is causing her strife,
It’s a stale and hopeless life.
Oh daughter can’t you see,
Your time is short, its time to leave.
And we all need something to run from,
But we never quite know where to go,
And we all need someone to run to,
But you must never let it show.
They say every man must own a shed,
If he is to contemplate his choice,
And that every man will be a preacher,
On the day he finds his voice,
But when I was screaming like an infant,
You ignored me the most,
When you were staring right through me,
I knew then I was a ghost.
So I set fire to my shed then,
On the roof there I was hoist,
But you didn’t even look twice,
And you never heard my voice.
I was screaming like a French girl,
Getting oh so close,
You were staring right through me,
I knew then I was a ghost.
And in my humbling reflection,
Next year I’ll be coy,
All my screaming oh so worthless,
Now please take back my voice.
Who knows what the wind intends from you,
I asked the Gods but they never knew.
The wind was never in their remit,
They left us to shape it as we saw fit.
And now the wind begins to die,
Its knots tangled up in the sky,
Still are the rivers and the trees,
It seems the wind will do at its please.
You know once I tried to control its force,
But sure enough it grew the harder I fought,
Now I know that life will always be ok,
When I just let the wind take me away.
(Thought I’d write this about a rather un-apprecaited creature)
Somewhere on the forest floor,
A crow’s rebuilding a nest,
You banished him from your bedroom wall,
Without food or rest,
And he’s sick with rejection,
But he’s building up his home,
From time to time you wonder,
Where that crow has flown.
Somewhere on the forest floor,
Nowhere to be seen,
So dry your guilty hands,
They aren’t washing clean
And now you’re remorseful,
I fear your not alone,
‘Cause no one in the forest,
Appreciates the crow
(I’m currently in Adelaide by the coast in Australia, its beautiful here, wrote this from the the viewpoint of the picture I took below)
Adelaide Sky,
Scattered early one evening,
Showed me its blistered clouds.
My neck craned,
Still I searched for a story,
Above these baron lands,
Adelaide Sky,
Now the colours a falling,
My home is here tonight,
Its still life,
As it moves in slow motion,
so vivid and bright.
Adelaide Sky,
The horizon is fading,
The sun losing its glow,
The wind turns,
As it sleeps on the water,
Now’s my time to go.
Strange things,
Are going on next door,
Each half an hour,
Or maybe more,
A New soul enters again.
They stay only,
For a while,
They all come out,
and bear a smile,
Then on they go
My mind now,
Full of fantasy,
Is it drugs, sex
Or revelry?
I digress
Now six O’Clock,
Kathy leaves,
Tight black dress,
So no-one sees
Her leaving
Now two am,
And she returns,
Dressed in Red,
Walking firm,
Head down.
But now a glance,
Across at me,
I glance back,
From my balcony,
and back again.
Still I wonder,
Where she’s been,
Why the fuck,
She wont invite me in,
I’m going round…
(here’s another one I did last week, will come back and edit them next week, which would you like to see made into songs?)
The say every man must have a shed,
To contemplate his every choice,
They say every man will be a preacher,
Only when he finds his voice.
I was screaming like an infant,
And you ignored me the most,
As you were staring right through me,
I knew then I was your ghost,
So I set fire to my shed then,
And on the roof I was hoist,
But you never look twice,
And you never heard my voice,
And I was screaming like a French girl,
Getting oh so close,
But you were staring right through me,
I knew then I was your ghost,
And in my humbling reflection,
I think next time I’ll be coy,
All my screaming all for nothing,
And now I have no voice.
It’s so light here,
Made my home here in the shade,
She’ll be sleeping now,
In Englands winter grey,
She’ll be dreaming of,
The Ghost that was last week,
When we were dancing,
Under your unmade sheets,
Oh my Lover,
Out cold tonight,
She lies still,
Wont hear her till light,
It’s so dense these hours,
When I am far away,
If she could make it here,
I’d never let her stray,
I hope she’s dreaming of,
The times we stayed up late,
Now I’ve no patience,
I wait for her to wake.
Oh my Lover,
Out cold tonight,
She lies still,
Wont hear her till light,
Again my Hesitation,
Is the death of me,
I tried to step towards you,
So purposefully,
I tried to be so mindless,
But the further in I lent,
The more my heart was beating,
To the consequence,
Again my hesitation,
The source of my ills,
I prey for greater answers,
But God wouldn’t stay still,
I tried to be so thoughtless,
It was all too much,
And now my head is weak,
But my heart is tough.
Again my hesitation,
Drags me down,
My thoughts of motivation,
Sound stupid out loud,
And in the final hours,
As you make your escape,
I call you back to my place,
With something to say.
(this one is work in progress, it’s one of the few I have music for)
Don’t you question,
What It’ll do,
‘Cause It’ll set my soul on fire and give it to you,
And don’t step out
On these sands
It’s all we have left in this baron lands
Still we all fall down and worship the sun
Still we all fall down when night wont come
And the water,
It’s long gone,
Taken to the heavens by a fiery Sun,
(I told you) don’t question,
Why it’s here,
Now like wirey trees you’re all collapsing in fear.
Still we all fall down and worship the sun
Still we all fall down when night wont come
(sorry these are all delayed I had no internet in Adelaide am just uploading them all now!)
I my dreams
I saw a girl, dark hair,
She is a poet,
It’s romantic, I know,
But I can be.
She wears,
Glasses like John,
Lennon and
Maybe her poetry is
A little like his.
In my dreams,
She is anxious, doesn’t,
Do restraint,
Her skin is pale, her
eyes are brown
She of course
Is a dreamer and we’ll
Move abroad,
France, write and drink,
Red wine, Coffee.
Last night that,
same girl awoke with me,
Her name was,
Anne, She was everything,
I imagined.
So this one was fairly rushed as I was at the MCG in Melbourne and am now off to Adalaide, hope you like it!
Sleep lightly old friend, I’ve noticed you trailing my scent
I’ve noticed you follow me closer than my shadow,
Selflessly helping me at times I never deserved,
And kissing my feet everywhere I go
I must admit to liking the attention,
But I know not what you crave
Or maybe I do know now
and will just humour your ways
Sleep lightly old friend, I found you smelling my clothes,
and my mind flickered, rolled, years back,
When were collided for a few days in the spring,
The dirty sheets and candle wax
I know you lust for more
though you say your my friend
But I still like the attention
And I’m happy to pretend
(Here’s day two written on Christmas day in Australia, in the spare two minutes I had in a mammoth storm!)
Joanne was the summer
A Gin in the sun
A flower in the graveyard
A heavey night undone
But when the evening grew thick
When the darkness descends
Joanne’s slower wilted
Down in the summers end
My God was a dancer
I moved with her feet
We drank in July time,
In our Cabin retreat,
But as the day grew thin,
On my own I would fend
My God lost her power
Gone at the summers end
My Love was a stranger,
Knew not of July,
The joy of the daylight,
And the summers wine
And as the days grew colder,
And the pine trees did bend,
We both grew closer
At the summers end

“Usurping the standard folk formula and carving a niche of their own, Gerard and Frid have a habit of grabbing what ever instrument comes to hand — be it guitar, banjo, mandolin… — retuning it and going from there. With rich harmonies meeting melody full on, Gerard and Frid could be the next alt folk heros.” The Wireless
We’re going to make a prediction. By the end of 2012, Dave Gerard will be signed on a top notch folk label like Bella Union with an album out that was rated 4/5 by The Times and 8.2 on Pitchfork. WeWriteLists
